In the late 1830's a small group of German settlers from Ohio and Pennsylvania purchased land along Hickory Creek near Loogootee, IL from the U.S. Government for $1.25 an acre.
These Sturdy pioneers with a lot of hard work, perseverance and strong faith in God, carved out their homes in the wilderness of Illinois. For ten years this small group met on Sunday at the home of John and Barbara Schwarm to worship their God. A Lutheran minister from Vandalia, IL came occasionally to offer the sacrament. Later the group built a log church which was replaced many years later by a frame building.

Faith, perseverance and a lot of hard work!
Something that seems to be lacking today. No one thought of asking the Government for a handout. If more loafers would get back to their basic ideals, we would have the kind of country our forefathers had forseen for us.
